Conventional Gravity System

A conventional gravity system is the most common type of on-site sewage system. It uses a septic tank to separate solids from liquid effluent, then relies on gravity to move clarified effluent through a distribution box and into perforated pipes in a gravel-filled drain field trench. No pump or external power is required for the core treatment and dispersal process.
Conventional gravity systems vary in tank size, trench configuration, soil type, and depth based on site conditions, age, and county health-department requirements at installation. Actual maintenance intervals, capacity, and repair options depend on the specific installation. How It Generally Works
1Wastewater enters the septic tank
All wastewater from the home flows by gravity through the main sewer line into the septic tank. Inside the tank, wastewater separates into three layers: sludge settles to the bottom where anaerobic bacteria break it down slowly, scum (grease and lighter materials) floats to the top, and clarified liquid effluent occupies the middle. Baffles at the inlet and outlet direct flow through the liquid layer and prevent solids from escaping.
2Effluent flows to the distribution box
Clarified effluent exits the tank through the outlet baffle - typically passing through an effluent filter - and flows by gravity to a distribution box (D-box). The D-box divides the flow evenly among the drain field trenches. On simpler single-trench systems, the pipe may run directly from the tank to the field without a separate D-box.
3Effluent disperses into the drain field
From the distribution box, effluent travels through perforated pipes laid in gravel-filled trenches below the surface. It seeps out of the pipes into the gravel, then through the soil beneath the trenches. Natural biological and physical processes in the soil remove remaining pathogens and nutrients. The treated water eventually percolates down to the groundwater.
Common Maintenance Considerations
Routine tank pumping
Sludge and scum accumulate in the tank over time. Without periodic pumping, solids may overflow toward the drain field, clog the distribution system, and load the soil. Household size, garbage disposal use, water use, records, system type, and county guidance can inform a pumping request; ask General Septic how they apply to the property.
Effluent filter cleaning
If the system has an effluent filter at the tank outlet, ask General Septic whether cleaning fits the pump-out request and applicable guidance. A clogged filter may restrict drainage and cause household fixtures to slow simultaneously.
Protecting the drain field
Keeping vehicles off the drain field area, avoiding deep-rooted plantings above the trenches, and managing water use during and after heavy rain all help preserve the drain field's capacity. A conventional gravity field that is overloaded repeatedly may take a long time to recover and may eventually fail.

Slow drains across multiple fixtures
When several fixtures slow at the same time - not just one drain line - the issue is typically in the tank or further downstream. A full tank, clogged effluent filter, or restricted outlet are common causes on gravity systems.
Wet ground or sewage odor above the drain field
Surfacing effluent, saturated soil above the trenches, or outdoor sewage odor near the field may suggest the drain field is receiving more effluent than it can currently absorb. Keep people and pets away, reduce water use, and describe the observation to General Septic or the applicable health authority.
Sewage backup inside the home
Sewage returning into fixtures is an emergency condition. On a gravity system it may indicate a full tank, blocked outlet, or severely saturated drain field. Stop water use and describe the condition to General Septic or the applicable health authority.
