Drain Field
Also called: leach field, absorption field, drainfield
The drain field - also called a leach field or absorption field - is the section of the septic system that receives clarified liquid effluent from the septic tank and disperses it into the surrounding soil for final treatment and disposal. It is typically a network of perforated pipes laid in gravel-filled trenches. The biological and physical processes in the soil remove remaining pathogens and nutrients before the treated water re-enters the groundwater.
What It Does
1Distribution and dispersal of effluent
Liquid effluent flows from the septic tank outlet - either by gravity or, in pump systems, by timed dosing - into the drain field pipes. The perforated pipes allow effluent to seep out into the surrounding gravel bed, which distributes it across the trench bottom and sidewalls where it contacts the soil.
2Soil treatment and groundwater recharge
As effluent moves through the soil, physical filtration, biological action by soil microorganisms, and chemical processes remove bacteria, viruses, and nutrients. This naturally treated water eventually percolates down to join the groundwater. The effectiveness of this process depends on the soil type, drainage rate, and whether the field is receiving properly clarified effluent from a functioning tank.
3Biomat and long-term capacity
Over time, a thin biological layer (biomat) forms at the soil interface in the trenches. A modest biomat helps filtration. An excessive biomat - often caused by solids escaping the tank or by hydraulic overloading - can seal off the soil and cause the field to fail. This is why proper tank maintenance and controlled water use directly protect drain field life.
Observable Signs That May Involve This Component
These signs may help describe a service need - they do not constitute a remote diagnosis. General Septic can assess the system on site as part of the requested service.
Wet, soggy, or spongy ground over the drain field
Saturated soil above the drain field trenches is one of the clearest warning signs. It may indicate that the field cannot absorb effluent at the rate it is receiving it - due to hydraulic overload, a heavy biomat, soil compaction, or tree root intrusion. Any persistent wet area over the field warrants evaluation.
Unusually green or lush grass in defined stripes
Nutrients in effluent act as fertilizer. A drain field that is surfacing or near-surfacing will often produce noticeably greener grass in bands that trace the trench layout. This is distinct from general lawn variation and is a sign worth investigating.
Sewage odor outdoors near the field
Outdoor sewage odor over or around the drain field - especially after heavy rain - can indicate that effluent is reaching or approaching the surface. It should not be dismissed as a temporary issue.
All fixtures backing up after tank was recently pumped
If a septic backup recurs shortly after pumping, the drain field rather than the tank is likely the limiting factor. A field that cannot accept effluent will cause liquid to back up through the tank into the house even when the tank itself is empty.
What Information Helps When Requesting Service

When to Describe a Request
Any persistent wet area, surface odor, or visible sewage above the drain field should be described promptly to General Septic or the applicable health authority. Reduce water use while the field is saturated. Ask General Septic whether the field may be temporarily overloaded or whether structural or biological issues should be evaluated; scope, timing, and options depend on the property.
