Pump Chamber

A pump chamber - also called a dosing chamber or pump tank - is a separate watertight compartment that receives clarified effluent from the septic tank and uses a submersible pump to deliver it to the drain field on a controlled schedule. It is used when gravity flow to the drain field is not possible or when controlled dosing is required by the system design or county regulations. The pump chamber typically houses the pump, the float switches that control pump operation, and the alarm float.
What It Does
1Controlled dosing of the drain field
Rather than allowing effluent to flow continuously into the drain field whenever it leaves the tank, a pump chamber doses the field in measured quantities at set intervals - or on demand based on liquid level. This resting period between doses allows the soil to absorb and treat each dose before the next arrives, which improves treatment efficiency and prevents hydraulic overloading.
2Elevation of effluent to drain field location
When the drain field sits uphill from the septic tank - on a hillside lot, for example - gravity alone cannot move effluent to the field. The pump provides the mechanical force needed to pressurize and deliver effluent uphill through a force main to the distribution point.
3Float switch and alarm integration
Float switches inside the pump chamber control pump operation. A low float starts the pump; a high float stops it. A third float - set above the normal high level - activates the alarm system when liquid rises unexpectedly, indicating that the pump is not running as expected. This alarm float and the control panel that drives it are designed to give early warning before the chamber overflows.

Alarm activation
An active alarm light or buzzer at the control panel is the clearest sign that the pump chamber needs attention. This could indicate pump failure, a stuck or failed float switch, a tripped circuit breaker, or an unusual volume of water entering the system. An alarm is designed to give a warning margin - but that margin is limited.
No audible pump operation
On systems where you can hear the pump cycle, an absence of pump sounds during periods when the pump would normally run - particularly if the alarm is also active - may suggest the pump is not operating.
Wet drain field with alarm active
If the drain field area appears saturated and the alarm is active, the pump may have been running continuously or erratically, overloading the field. Both conditions should be assessed together.
What Information Helps When Requesting Service

- Whether the alarm is currently active or has recently activated
- How long the alarm has been on (or when it first appeared)
- Whether silencing the alarm at the panel cleared the condition or whether it reactivated
- Any recent large water uses that might explain a temporary high-level event
- The pump brand or model, if visible on the control panel
When to Describe a Request
An active pump alarm warrants prompt attention. Reduce household water use immediately when an alarm is active because additional flow may bring the chamber closer to overflow. Describe the alarm to General Septic and ask what evaluation fits the request. Do not attempt to pull or adjust the pump or floats without appropriate training and equipment.
